Breast Enlargement (additive mastoplasty)
What is it?
Breast enlargement is one of the most common surgical procedures carried out by the Marylebone Clinic and is favoured by women wanting larger, fuller breasts, those whose breasts have altered in shape due to pregnancy and breast-feeding and also due to correct breast asymmetry.
Patient and surgeon will decide between them the size and most suitable point of access for the implants used in surgery. The implants are made up of an external silicone cover contained within which is silicone gel or saline solution.
How is it done?
Following a thorough examination to assess the patient’s state of health, the surgeon will then look at the individual’s breast size and shape as well as the areola and nipple area to establish what surgery options are appropriate in terms of shape and volume.
A small incision is made to insert the implants in the most appropriate place for the patient – periareolar, implantation from the submammary sulcus or auxillary.
The operation takes around 1 – 2 hours under general anesthetic after which the patient is required to spend a night in hospital and then wear a dressing which consists of a bra which will be replaced after a few days.
Recovery
Patients will require a one to two night hospital stay and will need 48 hours complete bed rest after which they can resume normal life albeit at a slower pace to begin with. We recommend that patients give themselves at least 7 – 10 before returning to work (unless it is excessively tiring) and 3 weeks before starting sporting activities again.
