Breast reduction surgery enables the modification of the size and shape of breasts that the patient feels are too large or are causing physical discomfort such as backache, chest pain or breathing difficulties.
How is it done?
During surgery under general anesthetic, excess breast tissue will be removed and the remaining tissue will be uplifted at the same time. The operation can take from 1.5 to 3 hours.
Occasional, small breast reduction operations are performed under local anesthetic with sedation and in outpatient care.
Recovery
Patients will require a one to two night hospital stay and will need 48 hours complete bed rest after which they can resume normal life albeit at a slower pace to begin with. We recommend that patients give themselves at least 7 – 10 before returning to work (unless it is excessively tiring) and 3 weeks before starting sporting activities again.
